If you stand at 5`5″ inches, you´re on the petite side. I´m 5´2″ and undeniably, a petite. Because I´m very slim with well-proportioned figure, I don´t look extra-petite. However, I always hated looking too short in photos and that urged my husband, who serves as my photographer, to find angles that make me look taller.
I can´t change my height and the fact that I´m short, but there´s one thing I could do to make me appear taller than my real height – to maximize my vertical silhouette. I turned to books and magazines which give fashion tips for petite women, and one particular book, The Pocket Stylist written by Kendall Farr, helped me understood the aesthetic of my height. Here are five things I avoid wearing.
Contrasting Colors Between Top and Bottom
When colorblocking became the trend, everyone hurried to copy it including petites. However, if you´re petite and you create a contrasting color combo between your top and bottom, it brokens your vertical line making you appear shorter. I know that colorblocking trend still lingers, in fact graphic colorblocking is making noise for Pre-Fall, but if you´re to create a colorblock combo, go for analogic colors (colors in the same family/shade) instead of clashing complementary colors.
Horizontal Designed Prints or Pattern
While I love stripes, I learned that horizontal prints and patterns shortens the wearer and widens the appearance of the wearer. The thicker the horizontal lines, the wider the body appears. Petites can opt for vertical designed prints and pattern to lengthen their vertical silhouette instead of widening their horizontal line.
Oversized or Exploded Multicolored Prints
Florals and boho prints are still one of the hottest trends of the season however, petites should be careful in choosing the prints to wear. Oversized and exploded multicolored prints will wear your height making you appear shorter. Instead, go for smaller-scaled graphics and prints.
Long (Ankle Length) Skirts
Long ankle length skirts will make you appear shorter. Knee length skirts and dresses would look great on petites. If you feel the urge to wear long skirt or a long maxi dress, go for something that hits halfway your shin. The sight of your lower legs down to your ankle will do the trick.
Too High Heels and Rounded Shoes
Being height-challenged, we sometime lean to high heels to add a few inches. However, if you´re height is 5´2″ and you wear shoes with 5 inches heels, the shoes would look disproportioned to your height. Shoes with 2-3 inches heels are perfect for you. Also, avoid rounded shoes, go for pointed toe shoes to give you even taller silhouette.
