In an interview with abc News, Diane von Furstenberg discussed her list of women candidates (empowered women who make a difference) for her annual awards as well as her top three picks for spring. A fan of this big name in the fashion industry, I´m surprised to find her fashion essentials trendy but subdued. Not surprisingly however, her list echoes exactly the essential features of her DVF Spring 2012 RTW.
So what includes Diane von Furstenberg´s picks for Spring?
1. A white Dress
Diane von Furstenberg Spring 2012 catwalk opened with a gorgeous white wrap dress, now it´s clear why. A white dress is actually number one on the list for this most-admired, fashion designer. But off a designer´s point of view, I understand the reason why the need for a white dress. It´s dainty and clean, soft under the sun, and very easy to dress up and down. It´s like styling a clean sheet, you can have lots of fun with your accessories.

2. Utilitarian Florals
I believe you are very aware by now that bold floral prints are a trend for spring and summer 2012. But it´s just not any floral. Diane clearly described her requirement for florals. They should be blooming with utilitarian shape overall. In other words, floral prints that are functional, creatively and carefully designed so that they´re trendy but not over-committed and exaggerated.
The next time you shop for floral summer dresses or for spring, remember what to look for in a printed dress.

3. Unusual Pastels
Power pastel trend is a must even for Diane. This is ought to silence those antagonist voices against pastels claiming that there´s no need to recreate a bland surroundings and get drowned in the background. You can definitely float out in your statement pastel combo if you know how to style it to impress.
But Diane von Furstenberg doesn´t go for a typical pastel matching and colorblocking, she looks for pastel combinations done in an unusual way. A pastel orange trousers paired with a neon green shirt pulled together with a pastel gray jacket and, well, a slim contrast belt. Or a pastel layered dress designed in a surprising way.
