The moment I saw TOD´S Italian Story for UK Vogue´s advertisement, a headless model wearing a bright yellow dress underneath black leather jacket, holding a black leather handbag and elevated by black leather pumps, grabbed my attention. For a while, I admired. Yellow dresses, this season´s color alongside pink – little pink dresses, anyone? – are definitely a must-have. There´s a number of creative fashionistas googling “how to wear yellow dress with black shoes”. And as a response, thus this post.
Indeed, yellow looks great with black. Together, they create an element of contrast – bright against dark, flirtiness against elegance, and happiness against dullness. It´s this element that makes yellow so fabulous. There are lots of ways you can wear a yellow dress. Below are some looks you can try on.
1. Wear a yellow tunic dress
An attractive tunic becomes more striking in yellow. Keep with the bright colors of the season by wearing yellow dress that has wide sleeves, a round neck and a V-neck decollete. Complete the look with a chain-detailed leather clutch and peep-toe shoes. For my version, instead of plain brown peep-toe heels, I opted for a 70’s inspired ankle boots which will be sure to electrify your look and brighten up your style, even more. This look is inspired by Kate Walsh and like her, you can wear a breast cancer awareness wrist band too, in pink, and a pair of silver stone dropped earrings.
2. Wear a belted yellow dress
Another way to wear a yellow dress is by going for something belted. Depending on the style of your dress, the belt can either be wide or slim, but it always has to be black. For my version, I chose a yellow flared belted dress paired with black leather sandal featuring latticed multi-straps with exposed silver zip centres, then I added some sparkle with a Valorie clutch and vintage glass drop earrings. Although yellow is a spring color, I don´t hesitate wearing it in any season and to any event. It´s a great way to positively pop a happy color. This look is especially perfect for cocktail parties.
3. Wear a one-shoulder yellow dress
You can also pull-off a classy and sophisticated yellow by wearing a one-shoulder fitted dress that fits right. Short or long dress? You decide. When you slip into such dress, I suggest wrapping your feet in luxurious gold shoes. Black tote handbag, silver bracelet watch and sunglasses are great to spice up this look. This outfit will bring you from day to night girly escapades.
4. Wear a jacket over yellow dress
A similar look inspired me to write this post, from the TOD´s Italian story. I love to wear a yellow ruched mesh dress under a leather jacket. They give a gorgeous clash of shades. I chose a drape jacket as a coverup for an effortless downtown style. I´d slip into black leather pumps and carry a black clutch. But I´d drop the tights, I prefer to go bare-legged.
So tell me Creative Fashionistas, how do you style a yellow dress?
