The older I get, the more I wear white. There´s something serene and fresh about this color, or should I say non-color, that makes me drawn to it.
Something about white makes me feel at home. Comfortable. But I can´t exactly put a finger on it. Maybe it´s because my wardrobe is predominantly comprised with bold prints that having white neutrals is a life-saver on days when I don´t have the time to mix and match. Mixing a bold print or color with white is always safe.
Or maybe it´s because unconsciously, I know that I look good in white. In fact, I look good in pure white.
Not everyone can wear white though. Only Winters and Summers look good in white. Pure white for Winters and soft white for Summers.
If you haven´t had your colors analyzed yet, subscribe to my email list to get updates on when my eCourse — identifying your colors — will be available.
But as a starter, notice how your face looks when you wear white. Do you glow? Or do you disappear? Can you see your hair color? Are your eye colors more visible when you wear white? Or is everything look faded?
The best way to do this is to take a portrait selfie of you. Then see how you look in white.
If you don´t feel your best when you´re wearing white, it´s a good indication that white isn´t your color.
Another thing you can do is try different shades of white. Maybe you can wear white but you only need to find your perfect shade of white.
That said, here are some style tricks you can use when wearing white clothes.
1. Wear White Clothes with bold prints.
Because I´m a lover of print, I have so many printed skirts. But how can I elegantly wear my printed skirts? Although the print on print trend has been growing in elegant styling, personally I´m not a big fan of it.
I still find it more elegant to tone down a print with a solid color or to let it pop with a solid white. And let it pop is my preference.
That´s the reason why I´ve been investing on more white pieces lately – so that I can actually wear many of my unworn printed pieces yet.
Just as much as I won many printed skirt, I also own many printed tops. In this case, I like wearing my printed tops mostly with black skirts. But that´s gonna be another blog post.
2. Opt for White Clothes with Striking Details.
I haven´t realized that I´m a lover of white until my mother-in-law pointed it out to me. She started gifting me with white bed sheets, pillows, table covers, and just anything white. She said it´s because she noticed that I use more white in my house than anything else. And that´s actually true.
I pondered on it and I came to realize that I love how clean and neat white color looks. Sure, it´s challenging to maintain. But to me, a little bit of maintenance for white goes a long way.
Focussing on striking details is my way to avoid looking dull in white. Bows, peplums and laces are just some of the striking details that can bring a whole lot of attitude to an otherwise muted white.
3. Pair White with Earthy Tones
Pairing white clothes with earthy tones is another great way to look polished yet relaxed in this color. If you feel like going head-to-toe white is too stiff, or too perfect, or too calculated, then team it up with any tones that is soft and down-to-earth.
4. When wearing head to toe white clothes for work, go for cropped pants.
Sometimes though, too much of white can be overbearing. If you´re wearing a white suit jacket with white trousers to work, you may come off as too strong or too perfect.
But if you go for trousers that are a little cropped on the hems, a hint of skin may suggest that you aren´t afraid to roll up your sleeves to get things done.
5. Team up your white clothes with black or gray.
Of course this is the most popular way of wearing white. Black and white create such flattering contrast that is irresistibel. But you can also be more creative by teaming a white sweater with a black printed skirt, for example.
6. Complete a little white dress with white accessories and shoes.
If you´re thinking of wearing a head-to-toe white outfit, a little white dress is your best pick. It´s going to look very polished without overdoing it. Of course it means showing off those perfect legs.
If you´re worried that white will highlight any imperfections on your legs such as varicose and spider veins, consider using body makeup.
7. When teaming your white top with black, finish the look with white shoes.
Basically the rule here is to match your top with your shoes. So if you´re wearing a white top with black jeans, your shoes should be white too.
Or if your top is black and your trousers are white, your shoes should match your top.
8. If you´re bored, choose embellished white clothes.
Some people find white clothes boring. If you´re one of those people, you may find embellishments the perfect solution.
9. Wear white clothes with pastels.
Another stylish approach to wearing white clothes is layering them with light shades of pastels. It creates a more interesting transition from white to soft pastel which is easy to the eye compared to the sharp transition of white to dark tones.
The result is also very feminine.
10. Match your white clothes with printed shoes.
If you finish your white outfit with printed shoes, the result is definitely glam. Op for not-so-bold printed shoes if you don´t want to distract the eye from the chic layering of your white, pastel and earthy tones.
11. Wear white as a teaser.
Basically this is all about letting the white pop-out by layering it under dark colors and prints. Your white garment will stand-out because it is such a tease.
12. Match your white clothes with a bright color.
And last but not the least, team your white clothes with bright solid colors. This works especially on times when you´re on a hurry and just wanna put on a fail-safe look with white. You´ll never go wrong by teaming it with a solid, bright color.
