Ugg boots are arguably the ugliest boots. In fact, there are claims that “Ugg” stands for “ugly”. Many wonder why there are celebrities who love wearing them on cold days and why many fashionistas embrace them. However, no matter which side of the spectrum you lean on when it comes to Uggs, you can´t deny the fact that they actually keep your feet warm when the days are chilly.
Update: I originally wrote this blog post exactly a decade ago when I was still new to fashion blogging. Since then, I´ve learned more about ugg boots and their origin. Did you know that “ugg” is a generic Australian term for sheepskin shoes? The original Australian ugg shoemakers have been manufacturing ugg boots for like over fifty years when suddenly, Footwear giant Deckers sued them for selling ugg boots in the US.
Imagine coining a word and making it popular, and then someone else steals it, and then registers it as their trademark, and then sues you for using the word you coined and then forcing you out of the market. So sad, right? You can read more about it here.
There´s no wonder why “ugg” is often ridiculed as “ugly”. That´s because the original ugg boots made by those Australian manufacturers who were pasionate about uggs were replaced by copycats.
Real good ugg boots are now hard to find.
So anyway, let´s suppose you´ve found a good pair of quality ugg boots. By using just a bit of creativity, you can actually look great in uggs. Since they´re stout, styling them is all about proportion, balance and details.
Whenever possible, wear them with leggings and skinny jeans; and then add some interesting details to your outfit. If you´re wondering how to wear ugg boots, below are some fashion inspirations to help you wear ugg boots with style.
1. Balance the Thickness of Ugg Boots with, well, More Volume!
One way to balance the sturdiness of ugg boots is by wearing more volume on top. Oversized sweaters or cardigans and thick, long knitted scarves are your best picks. If you´re wearing single solid colors on top, add contrast by opting for printed leggings. Alternatively, if your top is patterned or colored, go neutral on your leggings or jeans.
2. Wear Flattering Trench Coat with Ugg Boots
Trench coats are universally flattering. Worn with modern looking ugg boots and jeggings in dark shades, you have a comfortable but smart-looking winter outfit. Grab an oversized bag and your favorite sunglasses for more attitude.
3. Go for Great Details
Keep things interesting by adding lots of pretty details on your look. Team your ugg boots with colored jeans, a trendy jacket layered over a casual sweater, a great bag and a fabulous scarf. When these great pieces are thrown together, you got a rock-chic outfit. Nobody´s gonna accuse you of wearing ugly footwear!
4. Create a color combo for your ugg boots
In choosing ugg boots, it´s important to go for something of quality materials, preferrable sheepskin. This guarantees comfort, sufficient coziness and endurance. Get yourself at least two pairs of ugg boots, one in black and the other in ivory or brown, in different heights. Pull off your tall ugg boots when the weather is chilly or have fun with your lower half boots when the weather is mild.
For this look, it´s about creating a color combo that matches the color of your ugg boots. This is a very neutral look, featuring eathy tones, that are perfect for fall or spring.
5. Pair sheepskin with leather
This look features an element of contrast – cozy sheepskin versus egdy leather. Keep everything in the outfit feminine witb beige suglasses, white sweater dress and beige ugg boots, and then inject a dose of edgy through your leather skinny trousers.
6. Wool, sheepskin and knits!
There are days in winter when all you care about is to feel cozy and warm. Well, for those lazy days when even you´d rather hybernate at home you´re forced to run errands, dress up those thick winter leggings and comfy ugg boots with a bright knit sweater and a wool coat. Then inject a girly dose of color to the look through a bright pouch or handbag.
In order to balance its sturdiness, pair your ugg boots with tight-fitting skinny jeans. This is especially true if you have a roomy top, say a parka or an oversized sweater. You can also inject colors to your look. For example, if you´re wearing a black sweater and black tights, add a colored mini skirt then pull everything together with a dark-colored coat. The bright skirt is enough to spice up the look. You can also add colors through your scarf or bag.
Ugg boots are loved by girls for good reason. This explains why, in spite of many people calling it ugly, it never goes out of style.
I hope justice never goes out of style too. And that the Australian people who originally made ugg boots popular will see the light of day.
