I was reading today a great article about breaking up a suit tips for men and it got me thinking, how do women break their suit? When I was still working as a teacher, I had a few sets of tailored suit and trousers and I never broke them. Not because I was rigidly enrolled to the school of Don´t Break the Rules, but that I wasn´t sure how to do it.
In fact, if I´m to be honest, I got a blush tailored blazer in my closet as of this writing, which I´ve never worn because it doesn´t have a partner. I´ve always wanted to experiment how to wear it with other separates, but I guess I just didn´t have the courage.
That´s about to change though, ´cause this post will explore the ways women can break a suit. Are you with me?

1. Work with Colors

Colored suits are fun to break. First thing you need to do is identify which other colors blend well with it, either as a contrast or as a complement. Let´s say for example you have this lemon blazer and trousers suit set and you want to wear them separately. You know that this shade of yellow looks neat with white and black, but it can also look awesome with pink and blue.
You can wear the lemon jacket over a white dress, with blue top and white jeans, or with a pink skirt. For the trousers you can partner it with a black cropped top, or with a white tank and a blue cardigan.

2. Play with Textures
ASOS Cropped Blazer with Clean Lapel
If you´re a working girl most certainly you have at least a set of black suit and trousers. You usually wear it with a button down, probably accented with a scarf or in my case, often with a neck tie. But how do you wear the suit jacket off the office? Examine its fabric. A poly-blend fabric will work well with a textured silk-blend fabric. As an example, this woven and cropped black blazer from Asos is partnered with silk-blend black trousers. Layered with a black and white tee, the result is both fresh and sophisticated.
On the other hand, you can also team your woven jacket with black (or colored) leather pants for night out parties.

3. Consider the Length
ASOS Linen Longline Blazer
Suits made from lightweight materials such as linen often comes with long lines. If your suit jacket has long, slim lapels and its hems hit below or around your second hip, you can easily style it casual, or even rugged, with simple tees and jeans. You can also go leggy with denim shorts.

4. Top that Straight Line
ASOS Straight Trousers with Jet Pocket
Most suit trousers are straight and although this line is really smart at work, oftentimes women have second thoughts on styling them for dressy events. How can you top the feminine side of a straight cut suit trouser? If it´s high waist, you should take advantage of the length that it offers. Choose a gorgeous top, preferably with minimalist appeal, featuring long flared sleeves or wide-cut sleeves. That subtle flare on your sleeves will balance the straightness of your trousers.
