Just like the Pre-Fall trends, many trends from spring and summer will transition to Fall and this is especially true for the dresses. Although there are some new dress trends to watch, a few that have been with us for a couple of seasons now such as peplums, pastel, florals and lace are here to stay and are made even trendier. I spent two days compiling these looks and now I´m happy to bring you the top 13 dress trends for Fall 2012.
Table of Contents
Fall 2012 Dress Trend #1: Cape Dresses
Cape dress trend is very evident from the stage that it made the fashion press gushing about it. From Giambattista Vali´s sheer and printed cape dresses to Stephane Rolland´s monochromatic looks with interesting feather details, and up to Alexis Mabelle´s dramatic ruffled collars and contrasting undersides, we´re giving cape dresses a thumbs up for tapping an otherwise dull fall dress with some drama.
Fall 2012 Dress Trend #2: Red
For pre-fall, we talk about popping a fine red to a look say, a pair of red pumps with a neutral colored outfit or to contrast a red sweater with black. But for fall dresses, be prepared to bring out that entire confidence in you with a style queen – red dress.
Fall 2012 Dress Trend #3: Peplum
The peplum trend is so here for fall. Half diamond pleated peplums, peplum balloons and floppy ear-like peplums such as the one from Giambattista Vallis´printed dress, are the new interpretation of this trend, exaggerated and trendier.
Fall 2012 Dress Trend #4: Black
Whether it´s a peplum little black dress, a slim silhouette or with fish tail, fall 2012 will see a come back of this classic that is forever elegant – black dresses. It just makes sense, as the weather starts to cool, the color will save you some heat.
Fall 2012 Dress Trend #5: Asymmetrical
You had fun with hi-low dresses for spring and summer and you think it ends there? Well, asymmetrical style is still here but instead of going high in front and low behind, we´re seeing more high from one side and down on the other side kind of asymmetrical fall dresses.
Fall 2012 Dress Trend #6: White
Your white summer dresses will definitely transition you to fall, just layer over it a white jacket or a white fitted cardigan. Fall 2012 white dresses focus on elegance, sexy cuts and lengthened silhouettes. White clearly looks good with gold accessories.
Fall 2012 Dress Trend #7: Metallic
You may already have been playing with a splash of metallic on your looks by now, think metallic jacket and clutch, but for fall, it´s brought to a much higher level, splashy metallic dresses. These dresses are great in the red carpet or special occasions.
Fall 2012 Dress Trend #8: Nude
After several seasons of strutting bright and printed dresses, it would be of good refuge to shift to nude, neutral dresses for fall. We´re not talking dull and blah fall dresses here though, but nude dresses accented with sequins, fabulous rosettes and interesting capes.
Fall 2012 Dress Trend #9: Florals
It´s exciting to see how florals are made more delicious for fall. From little dresses, frilled and ruffled dresses to evening gowns, floral dresses for fall aren´t about shocking, over the top prints but elegant and sexy floral designs.
Fall 2012 Dress Trend #10: Sequins
When it comes to vogue, sequins isn´t new. However, this trend is embrace even more at the runway for fall. Elie Saab did a very classy interpretation of this trend by making sheer evening gowns sprinkled all over with standout sequins accents. Zuhair Murad on the other hand focused on creating girly and very feminine lace sequined princess cut dresses.
Fall 2012 Dress Trend #11: Pleated
A pleated dress is surely too hard to maintain but it looks very gorgeous from the stage. Valentino and Staphane Rollant re-created the colorblock trend only this time, in the forms of two-toned pleaded long dresses. Jean Paul Gaultier flowy pleated dress is definitely a superstar.
Fall 2012 Dress Trend #12: Pastel Pink
Although this trend is a minority, it proves that designers aren´t done with pastels yet and I´m certain, there´s still a good amount of market that will consume pastel for fall. I noticed that among all shades of pastel, pink is very polished and neat. Chanel created a pastel pink dress with sequins accent belt and waist side cutouts, Christian Dior went for a pastel pink dress with emphasized side pockets, while Giambattista Valli´s evening gown prides a ruffled collar.
Fall 2012 Dress Trend #13: Bright Evening Dresses
As always, the fall 2012 runway did not fall short of adoring evening dresses that are perfect for any showdown, red carpet or special parties. There were two kinds of evening fall dresses that really stood out – 1) the bright monochromatic long dresses with Angelina Jolie´s high slit and 2) bright or sequined princess gowns.
