Everybody likes to look great and feel great, but you don’t always get to have both. The reality is, we don’t feel 100% every single day. But on the days where we’re not feeling like we’re in tip top shape, it’s important to know how to look better than we feel.
So whether you’re sick, recovering from pregnancy or surgery, or just having a rough menstrual cycle, there are ways to keep up appearances that everyone can manage.

1) Focus on Form.
Looking good can be difficult, especially if you’re a new mom returning to work from maternity leave, or a woman of any age recovering from surgery. In days like this, it’s not important to stand out from the pack. Right now, you want to focus on the fundamentals: fit and form. Especially if you are recovering from pregnancy, your body has yet to pull itself back together.
The same is likely true of your wardrobe, which still contains a bunch of maternity wear you no longer need.
In situations like this, I recommend well-fitted clothes, though not tight. Show up the parts of your body which haven’t been as challenged by the past several months, like your legs. Also, consider Leonisa post-surgical shapewear. This can help you look like normal around the office, giving you time to recover to the point where you will feel normal as well.
2) Focus on Color.
If you are uncomfortable or don’t want to draw undue attention to yourself, consider wearing a darker color palette than normal. This doesn’t mean that you have to look like you’ve just come from a funeral. But dark colors tend to be unassuming.
If you wear something that fits well, that doesn’t draw attention, this can allow you to live your life, return to work, and socialize, all while looking your best, but also not standing out more than you wish.
3) Keep Warm.
It’s at times like this that comfortable clothes can be your best friends. If you aren’t going to mess around with cramming your body into form-fitting clothing, do the opposite. Sweaters, harem pants, and certain dresses can give your body room to do its thing without looking baggy or frumpy.
Well chosen patterns and colors are the key to success here, so that you’ll be able to look great no matter how you are feeling or what you are going through.
In the end, it’s not all about how you look, but taking the time you need to recover from illness, pregnancy, or surgery. Still, no one wants to look like they’ve been hit by a bus, even if they feel like it. If you’re not able to take unlimited time off from your work and social life, follow the above precepts to help you look a lot better than you feel. In time, your body will bounce back and you’ll be back to your old self again.
This happens to a lot of women at some point or other, so don’t worry too much about it. Just take the time you need, in the clothes you need, and you’ll be back to normal before you know it.
