When I learned that the culotte trend is back, it brought me smile. I remember when I was six in the 80´s my mom was selling culottes. She´d purchased them whole sale from some Indian friends and she´d retail them.
Now, the funny thing is that the word “culotte” is pronounced like “kulot” which in our local language means “curly” or “kinky”. I remember this six-year-old kid peeking from the kitchen door wondering why these weird looking men wearing turban talked endlessly about kinky hair in our living room. `Twas more than I could comprehend.
Dogtooth Wide Leg Culottes, $45.00
During that era, my mom would wear her culotte with shoulder padded t-shirt, tucked in, and pointed toe super high heels. Today, with this trend´s fierce comeback, you can tuck in a pastel sweater for daywear, or a stunning collared button down shirt for formal affairs.
Kiya Midi Length Culotte Shorts, $26.00
Fast forward many years later and I got a midi length culotte myself, in military shade. It was in the early 2000´s when I was in the university. I loved how it felt like a skirt but was comfy like shorts. I wore it with fitted tops and ballet shoes, if not sneakers. But for a modern look, you can wear it with a classy cami top, boxy blazer, and strappy heels.
Norah Bow Front Pleated Culottes, $32.00
A bright print short culotte brings some vintage elements to your modern wardrobe. You can wear it with tights or you can show off your pins when the day is warm. It provides versatility to mix and match with any of your separates.
Because black and white monochrome is coming back as a trend for spring 2014, I´m going for this ensemble. A black and white heart print culotte teamed with a simple white tee.
Stylestalker Power Forward Skort,
Modern fashion experts actually coined a new term for culotte, especially for the minis. It´s now called skort. A skort resembles short trousers but looks like a skirt. Opt for a vivid skort to wear with black tank, patterned blazer, and suave booties.
Rag and Bone Knife Skort, $325.00
A black skort with accordion-pleated overlay is perfect to wear with an awesome bomber jacket for effortless styling.
Now over to you girls, what to you think of culottes or skorts? Are you into the midi and below the knee culottes or would you rather opt for the mini skirts?
